If you're an armchair angler, you've no doubt heard of these fantastic game fish.  Better yet, you've seen it on tv. Yes, these fish are strong, powerful and fast! The challenge in fishing for them is more akin to hunting than fishing. Patience and skill  are  typically necessary to have  a productive day, but Lady Luck does climb aboard occasionally. Typically pursued while sightfishing the flats, they can be caught "blindly" while still bait fishing.
All three are regularly caught on fly fishing tackle, that is if you are an accurate and swift caster. Light tackle spinning rods are routinely utilized for those who do not fly fish.  Bonefish are caught year round, typically best in the Spring and Fall for the larger ones. An average bonefish weighs about eight pounds, while 10 to 12 pound fish are routinely taken year round. Tarpon can be caught year round as well. The best guides are booked at least six months in advance during "tarpon season" (April thru June) when the larger fish migrate thru the Florida Keys.
An average tarpon in season can weigh nearly 80 pounds, with many over 120! Juvenilles are considered to be under 30 pounds.  Permit can be found nearly all year, though they seem to found mostly during the warmer months.
